What accomplishments are you most proud of in your career?

My biggest accomplishment is advancing throughout my career while being an introvert. Talking in front of people and being a supervisor does not come naturally to me. It’s amazing what you can do when you put your mind to it.

How do you handle change and challenges in the workplace?

Since I started working, I have been involved in constant change. From starting off on paper spreadsheets, to Lotus 123, to Excel. Technology is here to help you. In my case, I just need to understand the why first. When faced with challenges, sometimes you must walk away and reset, then go back and start over. When things go wrong, it actually causes me to get the giggles! Laughter can be a great stress reliever.

Share an experience where you actively participated in a community initiative.

It was a family activity volunteering for the Superior Sister City Commission with the Japanese from Ami-Machi, Japan. We have hosted students, volunteered in activities, and joined the delegation for Japan. We enjoyed hosting high school students from Munster, Germany and international students who attended UWS. Boy scouts was another family activity that ended with my three sons as eagle scouts!

What advice would you give to someone recently starting in their career?

Nothing is set in stone. Careers change, technology changes, coworkers change, locations change, and even your employer can change. You need to be able to adapt and keep going in any career. Sometimes you do not feel prepared or qualified but take the chance and keep going. You will surprise yourself.

Over your 31 years at NBC, what are a few of your fondest memories?

My fondest memories are not of work but who I worked with. Coworkers can help you through the boring routine or challenging days. I remember laughing with the team, but not because I was happy, but because nothing was working. It wasn’t in our control; we were just waiting for support to call back and help. I have worked with a lot of great people throughout my life. Of course, we all have our quirks, but we had the ability to overcome it and achieve great things.

What are your plans for the next 5 years?

That is easy, moving to The Villages in Florida. Spending time visiting the grandchildren, joining clubs, trying new things, traveling, or relaxing in the lanai by the pool.
